The Abbasid Caliphate was a huge and famous empire. It was the third Islamic caliphate to rule. The ruling family was named after Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. He was the uncle of the prophet Muhammad. This family connection helped them gain support from many people. They rose to power in the year 750. This happened after a revolution overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate.

The Abbasids changed how the empire was run. They moved the center of power to Iraq. This was far from the old Umayyad lands. In the year 762, a leader named al-Mansur founded Baghdad. He named the city Madinat al-Salam, which means City of Peace. Baghdad sat right on the Tigris River. It became the main capital for most of their history.

They shared many different religions and cultures. The city had famous schools like the House of Wisdom. Scholars came from all over to study and invent new things.

Power shifted many times during these years. The reign of Harun al-Rashid was a very famous time. After him, a civil war caused new divisions. The empire even built a new capital called Samarra in 836. Over time, many provinces became independent. Groups like the Samanids and Tulunids took control of different areas. Some leaders even held more power than the caliphs.

The end of the empire came in a hard way. In 1258, the Mongols attacked the city of Baghdad. This event was led by Hulagu Khan. It brought an effective end to the Abbasid rule. A small branch of the family lived in Cairo later. They held a symbolic role but had no real power. This lasted until the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1517.
