The war was caused by many different disagreements. One big problem was how leaders should be chosen. Mu'awiya decided to name his son Yazid as the next leader. This was a new way of doing things. Many people thought this was wrong and did not want Yazid to rule.

Three main groups challenged the Umayyad family for power. The first group was led by Husayn ibn Ali. He was a relative of the Prophet Muhammad. Husayn wanted to fight for his rights in Iraq. He was intercepted and killed at the Battle of Karbala in October 680.

The second group was led by Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr. He lived in the city of Mecca and called himself caliph. Most of the lands followed his leadership for a while.

The third group was the Kharijites. They took over parts of Arabia, Iraq, and Persia.

After Husayn died, new movements rose up to seek justice. A group called the Tawwabin wanted to avenge him. They were led by Sulayman ibn Surad. This group fought the Umayyads at the Battle of Ayn al-Warda in 685. They lost the battle and most of their men died. Later, a man named Mukhtar al-Thaqafi took control of Kufa in Iraq. He led many non-Arab converts in his fight.

Mukhtar won a battle at Khazir in 686. However, his followers were eventually defeated by the Zubayrids in 687.

Eventually, the Umayyad family regained their strength and control. A leader named Marwan I was proclaimed caliph in Syria. His successor was Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. This leader was very successful at winning back lost lands. He defeated the Zubayrids at the Battle of Maskin in 691. He also took Mecca back in 692.

His general, Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, worked to stop the Kharijites. The Umayyads finally held power across most of the region again.

Abd al-Malik made many important changes to the government. He made the central power of the caliph stronger. He also changed how the military worked. He made the government use more Arabic and Islamic rules. These wars had a lasting effect on the Islamic community. They helped shape the different groups known as Sunni and Shi'a. These groups grew from the tensions during the civil war. The history of this time still matters to people today.
