The Battle of Karbala was a major event in early Islamic history. It happened in the year 680 in a place called Karbala. This area is in modern-day southern Iraq. The battle was a clash between two different sides. One side was led by Yazid I, who was the second Umayyad caliph. The other side was led by Husayn ibn Ali. Husayn was the grandson of the prophet Muhammad. This event was not just a simple fight between two armies. It changed how people understood leadership and justice forever.

The conflict began because of how leaders were chosen. Before he died, a leader named Mu'awiya I chose his son Yazid to be the next ruler. This was a big change in how things worked. Many people thought leadership should be decided by a group through consultation. Husayn and other important people did not agree with this choice. They felt that Yazid should not be the leader. Husayn lived in Medina, which is a city in Saudi Arabia. He decided to leave Medina to find support elsewhere.

After leaving Medina, Husayn traveled toward the town of Kufa in Iraq. The people in Kufa sent him letters asking him to lead them. They were unhappy with the Umayyad rulers. Husayn traveled with his family and about 70 men. However, a large army was waiting for them. An army of 1,000 men first intercepted his group. Later, a much larger army of 4,000 soldiers arrived at the plain of Karbala. The two sides tried to talk, but they could not agree.

The actual battle took place on October 10, 680. This date is also known as 10 Muharram in the Islamic calendar. The fighting was very intense and sad. Husayn and most of his companions were killed during the battle. The surviving members of his family were taken away as prisoners. This event caused a lot of unrest in the region. It led to new movements by people who wanted to avenge Husayn. These groups were known as the Tawwabin and supporters of Mukhtar al-Thaqafi.

Today, the Battle of Karbala is still very important to many people. It helped the Shi'a become a distinct religious group. For Shi'a Muslims, Husayn is a hero who stood for truth against injustice. They remember his sacrifice every year during the month of Muharram. The tenth day is called the Day of Ashura. On this day, people hold processions and gather to mourn. Even Sunni Muslims see this event as a great tragedy. It remains a central part of history and memory.
