It contains the important shrines of Husayn and Abbas. These sites draw millions of pilgrims who visit twice every year. Some events are even larger than others. Up to 34 million people visit to observe Ashura, which marks the death of Husayn. Even more people come for Arba'een, the 40th day after Ashura. During this time, up to 40 million people visit the graves. Many of these travelers walk on foot from Iraq and over 56 other countries.

Long ago, a famous battle took place here in 680 AD.

This fight happened on the bare deserts on the way to Kufa. It was between Husayn ibn Ali and his small group of followers. They faced several thousand soldiers led by General Umar ibn Sa'd. Husayn had only about 73 men with him, including his family. The battle changed the history of the area forever. Because of this event, the city grew around the tombs of those who fell.

Many different empires have controlled Karbala through the years. After Baghdad fell in 1258, the Mongolian Empire led by Hulegu Khan took control. Later, the city was part of the Ottoman Empire. The city faced many hard times and wars during this period. In 1802, a group from the First Saudi State attacked the city. In 1843, Ottoman troops laid siege to Karbala. Later, in 1915, the people of the city held an uprising to drive the Ottomans out.

People have many different ideas about where the name Karbala comes from. Some think it connects to the ancient Karbalato language. Others believe it comes from the names of ancient Babylonian villages. One theory says the name means "sanctuary of God" using the Assyrian language. Another idea is that the name refers to the soft earth of the land. In Islamic tradition, some believe the name links to words for distress or affliction. These different stories show how much history is tied to this one place.
