Karbala is a very holy place for Shi'a Muslims. It is famous for a battle that happened in 680 AD. During this battle, Husayn ibn Ali and his small group fought many soldiers. This event makes the city a major center for pilgrims.

Many people visit the city to see the shrines of Husayn and Abbas. Millions of people come twice every year. Some events draw even more people. For example, up to 40 million people visit for Arba'een. Most of these visitors travel on foot. They come from Iraq and more than 56 other countries.

History has been hard for the city at times. Many different empires once ruled this land. The city has seen many wars and fights. In 1843, Ottoman troops laid siege to the city. In 1915, people in the city rose up against the Ottomans. Even with these hard times, Karbala remains a vital spiritual hub.
