The city is famous for a holy shrine. This is the place where Imam Reza is buried. Nearly 30 million people visit this shrine every year. Because of this, some call it the spiritual capital of Iran.

Mashhad has a very long history. Long ago, it was a small village called Sanabad. It sat on the Silk Road. This was an ancient path for trade. The city grew as more people came to visit the shrine.

Many important people lived near here. The poet Ferdowsi was born in the nearby town of Tus. Nader Shah also ruled from this city for a time. His tomb is still there today.
