In 817, a ruler named al-Mamun made a big choice. He named al-Rida as his heir. This means al-Rida was next in line to rule. Al-Rida did not want this job at first. He only said yes if he could stay out of government work. Some think the ruler did this to stop revolts. Others think he wanted to bring different groups together.

This news caused many people to disagree. Some leaders in Baghdad even tried to pick a new ruler. Al-Rida traveled to a place called Merv. Later, he died in a place called Tus.
