He was born in Medina around the year 766 CE. For Twelver Shia Muslims, he served as the eighth Imam. This means he was a central spiritual guide for that faith. He was also a figure of authority in Sunni Sufi orders. Many people remember him for his deep learning and piety. Several books are linked to his name, such as the Sahifah of al-Ridha.

His life changed when the Abbasid caliph al-Mamun made a surprising choice. In 817 CE, al-Mamun named al-Rida as his heir apparent. This meant al-Rida was officially next in line to rule the empire. Al-Rida did not want this political role at first. He only accepted the position under one specific condition. He insisted that he would not interfere in government affairs.

History shows that this appointment caused a lot of trouble. Many Abbasid leaders and Arab nationalists strongly disagreed with the choice. In Baghdad, some people even revolted and picked a different leader. They chose Ibrahim ibn al-Mahdi to be their anti-caliph instead. To manage this unrest, al-Mamun and al-Rida traveled toward Baghdad. They left the province of Khorasan to deal with the opposition.

Al-Rida's journey ended in a very mysterious way. In September 818 CE, he died when his party reached the city of Tus. His death happened shortly after another official, al-Fadl ibn Sahl, was killed. Some people believe the caliph al-Mamun was responsible for both deaths. The caliph may have wanted to please certain groups to help his return to Baghdad. This event remains a significant and serious moment in his history.

Today, the place where al-Rida lived and died is very sacred. The city of Tus was eventually replaced by a new city called Mashhad.
