His life changed when he was called to move to a new city. A ruler named the caliph al-Mutawakkil asked him to leave Medina. Ali and his family moved to the capital city of Samarra. This was a garrison town where many soldiers lived.

The caliph wanted to keep a very close watch on Ali and his followers. Because of this, Ali and his son Hasan were sometimes called al-Askari. This name refers to the restricted life they lived in Samarra.

Even though he was watched closely, Ali stayed very busy. He managed to talk to his followers through a secret network. These people acted as representatives for him. They helped organize religious matters and money for the Shia community.

He also taught many students from far away places. Some of these students came from Iraq, Persia, and Egypt. He was able to keep his faith strong despite the hard situation.

History shows that the time in Samarra was a difficult period. The Abbasid rulers were often not friendly toward the Shia people. Some leaders tried to make things hard for Ali by searching his house. Others tried to keep him away from his supporters.
