His career in law moved through many different steps. He started as a prosecutor in the city of Karaj in 1981.

Later, he worked as a prosecutor in Hamadan. He also moved to the capital city to work in Tehran. He held many high jobs in the courts. He was the Attorney General from 2014 to 2016. He also served as the Chief Justice from 2019 to 2021. These roles gave him much power over the law.

Much of his early work happened during a difficult time. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Raisi worked in the judicial system. In 1988, he was part of a group called a death commission. This group was in charge of executing political prisoners. This was a very serious and controversial time in history. Because of this, some people called him the "Butcher of Tehran." Many groups said his actions were against human rights. He did not deny being at those meetings later in life.

Raisi worked hard to become the president of Iran. He first ran for the office in 2017.
