His life was shaped by his work in politics and education. He wanted the government to follow Islamic laws. This meant he believed leaders should be Muslim. He also wanted the state to work closely with religious groups. These ideas were very important to how he ran the country.

Rajai grew up in a city called Qazvin. He was born there on June 15, 1933. His father, Abdolsamad, worked as a shopkeeper. Sadly, his father died when Rajai was only four years old. Later, Rajai moved to the big city of Tehran. He joined the Air Force when he was a teenager. He eventually graduated from Tarbiat Moallem University in 1959. After that, he worked as a teacher of mathematics.

His path to leadership involved many hard steps. Rajai joined the Freedom Movement of Iran in 1960. He was arrested at least twice for his political views. His longest time in prison lasted from 1974 to 1978. He once showed a hurt foot to the United Nations. He said he was hurt by guards while in prison. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, he became the minister of education.

Right after he started, he named Mohammad-Javad Bahonar as the new prime minister.

His time as president ended very suddenly. On August 30, 1981, Rajai and Bahonar held a meeting. A person brought a briefcase into the room during the meeting. A bomb inside the case went off and caused a fire.
