Many people call him Zayn al-Abidin. He was born around the year 658 in Medina or Kufa. His family tree was very noble on both sides. His grandfather was Ali ibn Abi Talib. Some sources say his mother was a princess from the Sasanian Empire. Because of this, he was given a special title meaning noble descent on both sides.

His early life included many difficult moments. In the year 680, he was at the Battle of Karbala. He was too ill to fight in the battle. During this event, his father Husayn and many other relatives were killed.

After the battle, Ali and other survivors were taken as prisoners. They were marched to Kufa and then to Damascus. The Umayyad leaders held them there for a time. The captives were often shown to people in the streets. This was a very hard time for the survivors.

In Damascus, the captives were brought before the caliph Yazid I. There are different stories about how he treated them. Some historians say he felt regret for what happened. Other accounts say he was not kind to the prisoners. Some people believe he released them because the public was angry. After this time, Ali was finally allowed to return home. He went back to his hometown of Medina to live. He chose to live a very quiet and private life there.

Ali did not join many political fights or uprisings. Instead, he spent his days on worship and learning. He became a leading expert on Islamic law and tradition.

Even people who were not Shia respected his character. He was known for being very pious and virtuous. He often wept when remembering the events at Karbala. Many people see him as a great example of patience. He showed how to stay strong when things are very hard.

Ali al-Sajjad died around the year 712. Some say he died of natural causes. Other sources say he was poisoned by the Umayyads. He was buried in the al-Baqi cemetery in Medina.
