Millions of people travel to a shrine in Karbala, Iraq. This shrine honors Husayn ibn Ali. He was the grandson of the prophet Muhammad and the third Shia imam. For many, this event is a way to show faith and strength. It is a time of deep meaning for the Shia Muslim community.

Most pilgrims follow a specific path to reach the shrine. Many people start their journey in the city of Najaf. They walk about 80 kilometers to reach Karbala.

This long walk often takes about three days to complete. Along the way, many volunteers help the travelers. They set up thousands of hospitality units to provide free meals. They also offer free places to sleep and medical care. Some even provide services like dentists to help the pilgrims. Volunteers see this kindness as a religious duty.

This tradition is tied to a very old history. Arba'in happens forty days after the day known as Ashura. On the tenth of Muharram in 680 CE, Husayn was killed. This happened during the Battle of Karbala. He fought against the army of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Husayn refused to pledge his allegiance to Yazid. For Shia Muslims, this event represents a struggle between good and evil. It is a moment of great self-sacrifice. The number forty is also considered a sacred number in Islam.

Over the years, the size of this event has changed. In the past, the pilgrimage was sometimes small or private. The Iraqi president Saddam Hussein once banned the ritual. However, the gathering grew very fast after he was removed from power in 2003. In 2003, there were about two million participants. By 2014, that number grew to around twenty million people. In 2015, some reports said there were twenty-two million pilgrims. It is now the second largest human gathering after the Kumbh Mela in India.

Today, the pilgrimage involves many different types of people. While it is a Shia tradition, it has become a symbol of interfaith engagement. People from other faiths join the walk or help serve others. This includes Sunnis, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Yazidis, and Zoroastrians.

Some people also participate to protest against oppression. Even though it is a huge event, it is not well known in the West. It is much larger than the Hajj pilgrimage, which is another famous Muslim journey. Many people come together to find solidarity and shared purpose.
