Many pilgrims walk from the city of Najaf. This path is eighty kilometers long. The walk can take three days. Along the way, volunteers help the travelers. They give out free meals and places to sleep. Some even provide medical care like dentists. People see this kindness as a religious duty.

Arba'in happens forty days after Ashura. Ashura is the day Husayn was killed in a battle. This event happened a long time ago in the year 680 CE. For Shia Muslims, this time is for mourning. It also shows a fight between good and evil. Today, people from many faiths join the walk. This includes Christians, Jews, and Hindus. Some people even come to help serve the pilgrims. Even though it is a huge event, many people in the West do not know about it.
