His life had many hard parts. He was at the Battle of Karbala. He was too sick to fight in the battle. His father, Husayn, died there. After the battle, Ali and other survivors were treated poorly. They were taken to the city of Damascus. Later, he was allowed to return to Medina.

In Medina, Ali lived a very quiet life. He did not join many wars. Instead, he spent his time on prayer and learning. He was a great expert on Islamic law. Many people respected his good character. He is seen as a model of patience.

Some people say he died of natural causes. Others believe he was poisoned. After he died, his son Muhammad became the next leader. Shia Muslims still honor him today. They collect his prayers in a special book. This book is very important to them.
