Muhammad al-Baqir was a famous religious scholar. He lived in Medina a long time ago. He was born around 676 CE. He was a descendant of the prophet Muhammad.

Many people gave him special titles. One title meant he could split knowledge open. This was because he was so wise. He was the fifth imam for Shia Muslims. An imam is a leader in the faith. He focused on teaching and learning. He did not fight for political power. Instead, he built the rules for his faith. This helped create the Twelver and Isma'ili groups.

Many students came to study with him. Some traveled from far away. He was known to be a very kind man. He was also very good at archery. Some reports say he was even a great marksman. Al-Baqir died around the year 732. Most Shia reports say he was poisoned. He is buried in the Baqi Cemetery. His son, Ja'far al-Sadiq, became the next leader. Ja'far continued his father's work in teaching.
