Hasan al-Askari was a leader for many Shia Muslims. He was a descendant of the prophet Muhammad. He was born in Medina in the year 844. When he was very young, he moved to Samarra. This was a town where rulers kept him under close watch.

Hasan became the eleventh Imam after his father died. He led his followers for about six years. Because the rulers watched him, he could not meet everyone in person. Instead, he used a group of helpers to talk to his people. He also wrote a book to help explain the Quran.

Hasan died in Samarra when he was about twenty-eight years old. Many Shia sources believe the rulers caused his death. He was buried in his family home. This home later grew into a large, beautiful shrine.

His death caused many people to wonder about the future. Some followers believed he had a son named Muhammad al-Mahdi. They believe this son was kept hidden to keep him safe. Today, many people go on a special journey to visit the shrine in Iraq.
