His father was Hasan al-Askari. When the eleventh Imam died in the year 874, things changed. A man named Uthman claimed the Imam had a son. This son was kept secret to keep him safe from harm. This state of being hidden is called occultation.

For about seventy years, the Imam had four special helpers. These helpers were called deputies. They acted as his representatives. This time is known as the Minor Occultation. It ended when the last deputy died. A final letter said the Major Occultation had begun. This is the period of being hidden that continues today.

Twelver Shia believe the earth always needs an Imam. They think God has given the twelfth Imam a very long life. Some people believe he sometimes appears to those who are very holy. He has many titles, like al-Mahdi and al-Qa'im. These names remind people of his role as a savior.
