The Islamic New Year is a special time. It marks the start of a new Hijri year. This year follows the moon. Most Muslims start the year in the month of Muharram. The year count began a long time ago. It marks the Hijrah. This was when Muhammad and his followers moved from Mecca to Medina. This move happened in the year 622 CE.

People use this calendar for many things. It helps them know when to pray. It helps them find dates for fasting. It also helps them find holy festivals. A new day starts at sunset.

There are different ways to find the date. Some people look for the new moon in the sky. Other places use math to find the date. This math is called an astronomical calculation. Because of this, dates can change by one or two days. Some countries use the Umm al-Qura calendar. This calendar is used in Saudi Arabia. The Islamic year is shorter than the solar year. This means the new year happens on different days each year.
