A lunar calendar tracks the moon. It uses the moon's phases to mark months. These phases are called lunations. Each lunation takes about 29.5 days. Because of this, months alternate between 29 and 30 days.

A lunar year is 354 days long. This is shorter than a solar year. A solar year follows the sun. The lunar year is 11 to 12 days shorter. This means months move through all the seasons. This cycle takes 33 to 34 years.

Different groups start their months in different ways. Some look for the first crescent moon. This is a thin sliver of light. Others use math to find the date. Some calendars start after a full moon.

Many calendars are actually lunisolar. These use both the moon and the sun. They add a thirteenth month every few years. This is called intercalation. It keeps the months in line with the seasons. The Chinese and Hebrew calendars do this.
