Lunar calendar

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A lunar calendar tracks the phases of the Moon. These cycles are called lunations. Each lunation lasts about 29.53 days. This is 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds. Because of this, months often alternate between 29 and 30 days.

This way of tracking time is very important. It helps people know when certain cycles happen. The Islamic calendar is the most common lunar calendar used today.

Lunar calendars work differently than solar calendars. A solar year follows the sun. A lunar year is made of 12 lunations. This lunar year is about 354 days long. That is 354 days, 8 hours, 48 minutes, and 34 seconds. A lunar year is 11 to 12 days shorter than a solar year. Because they are shorter, the months move through all the seasons. This whole cycle takes 33 to 34 lunar years to finish.

People have used the Moon to measure time for a long time. Some scholars think ancient hunters watched the Moon very long ago. Samuel L. Macey says people used the Moon for this 28,000 to 30,000 years ago. In the 8th century, Muslim astronomers created a special system. They made the Tabular Islamic calendar to predict the first crescent moon. This system uses a 30-year cycle to stay accurate. It uses 11 leap years of 355 days and 19 years of 354 days.

Different calendars start their months in different ways. The Hijri calendar starts when people see the first crescent moon. This thin sliver of light is called the Hilal. Other calendars use math to find the new moon. The Hebrew and Chinese calendars start on a specific astronomical new moon. Some Hindu calendars start the month the day after a full moon.

These different rules help people stay in touch with the sky.

Many calendars are actually lunisolar. This means they use both the Moon and the Sun. They use intercalation to stay in line with the seasons. Intercalation is adding a thirteenth leap month every few years. The Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Hindu, Hebrew, and Thai calendars are lunisolar. In the Banks Islands, the calendar even follows the palolo worms. These worms mass on beaches during the last quarter of the lunar month.
