A full moon is a special phase of the Moon. It happens when the Moon looks like a bright, circular disk in our sky.

This phase occurs when Earth is located between the Sun and the Moon. Because of this position, the side of the Moon facing us is completely sunlit. This happens about once every 29.53 days. This length of time is called a synodic month.

There is a specific way this works. The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5.145 degrees away from Earth's path around the Sun. Because of this tilt, the Moon usually passes above or below Earth's shadow. However, sometimes the Moon crosses the path where the shadow lies. This is called a node. When a full moon happens near a node, a lunar eclipse can occur.

During these eclipses, the Moon might look reddish. This happens because sunlight bends through Earth's atmosphere. This process is known as refraction. It can make the Moon look like a "blood moon."

People have studied the Moon for a very long time. Many different cultures have found the full moon important. For example, Buddhists celebrate Vesak on a full moon day. In Hinduism, people observe many different Purnima festivals. Some traditions even give special names to certain moons. The names "harvest moon" and "hunter's moon" were recorded in the 1700s.

These names describe moons in late summer or autumn. They help people track the seasons and farming tasks.

There are many interesting facts about these moons. A full moon is not always perfectly round. It is only perfectly full at the exact instant waxing ends. Most months, a full moon happens on the 14th or 15th day. Sometimes, the Moon looks orange or gold near the horizon. This is because the light passes through a thick layer of air. This air scatters blue light away and leaves red or yellow light.

This effect can make the Moon look very large and bright.

You might notice the Moon's color change in your own backyard. If you see a Moon that looks very orange, it might be a harvest moon. The harvest moon is the one closest to the autumnal equinox. This equinox happens around September 22 or 23. The hunter's moon is the one that follows it. You can also see how the Moon's timing changes. Each day, the Moon rises about 50 minutes later than the day before. This makes the Moon a constant but changing part of our night sky.
