A new moon is the very first phase of the moon.

It happens when the moon and the sun reach the same spot in the sky. Astronomers call this moment conjunction. During this phase, the moon is not visible to your eyes. The side of the moon facing Earth is dark. You might only see it if it blocks the sun. This special event is called a solar eclipse.

To understand how this works, we look at the moon's path. The moon moves around the Earth as the Earth moves around the sun. A lunation is the name for the time between one new moon and the next. On average, one lunation lasts 29.53059 days. This is about 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds. The length can change slightly from 29.26 to 29.80 days. This change happens because the sun's gravity pulls on the moon's orbit.

People have used different ways to number these moon cycles for a long time. One way is the Brown Lunation Number. This system started with a man named Ernest William Brown. His lunar theory appeared in a book in 1923. The first cycle in his system began on January 17, 1923. Another scientist named Jean Meeus created a new number in 1998. His system calls the first moon of the year 2000 "lunation 0."

Many cultures use the new moon to mark the start of a month. In the Islamic calendar, a new month begins when the first crescent is seen. This is a thin, curved shape in the western sky. In the Hebrew calendar, the new moon is a holiday called Rosh Chodesh. The Hebrew calendar uses rules from Hillel II to stay in season. The Chinese calendar also starts its months with the new moon. Some Buddhist people in China choose to eat no meat on this day.

In the Hindu calendar, the new moon is also very important. It has fifteen moon dates for the waxing and waning periods. These dates are split into five groups like Nanda and Jaya. Some dates are good for community work or for dealing with conflict. The new moon also helps decide the date of Easter. Easter is a movable feast in the Christian calendar. It is set fourteen days after the first crescent new moon.
