Eclipse

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An eclipse is a special event in space. It happens when one object moves in front of another. This movement blocks light and creates a shadow. This alignment of three objects is called a syzygy.

Eclipses can happen anywhere in space. A planet might move into the shadow of its moon. A moon might pass into the shadow of a planet. Even stars in a binary system can have eclipses. These events are amazing to watch from Earth.

Shadows during an eclipse have three different parts. The darkest part is called the umbra. In the umbra, the object completely covers the light source. The antumbra is the area just beyond the tip of the umbra. In this part, the object is in front of the light but too small to cover it. The penumbra is the lighter shadow area. In the penumbra, the light source is only partially blocked.

Solar and lunar eclipses are the most famous kinds. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun. This happens when the Moon's shadow crosses Earth's surface. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into Earth's shadow. This only happens during a full moon.

A total solar eclipse happens if you are in the umbra. An annular eclipse happens if you are in the antumbra. A partial eclipse happens if you are in the penumbra.

Eclipses do not happen every single month. This is because the Moon's orbit is tilted. It is tilted about five degrees from Earth's orbit. Eclipses only happen during an eclipse season. This happens twice every year.

Even during a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is not totally dark. Earth's atmosphere bends light into the shadow. This makes the Moon look a faint, ruddy red.
