Sometimes the Moon looks orange or red. This happens when the Moon is low in the sky. Its light passes through a thick layer of air. This air scatters blue light away. This leaves red and yellow light for us to see.

People use special names for some full moons. The harvest moon is the one closest to the autumnal equinox. The hunter's moon follows it. These moons happen in late summer or autumn.

Sometimes a lunar eclipse happens during a full moon. This is when the Moon moves into Earth's shadow. The Moon may look reddish during this time. People sometimes call this a blood moon.
