A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun.

This blocks the view of the Sun from parts of Earth.

There are three main types of eclipses. In a total eclipse, the Moon covers the Sun completely. This lets you see the corona, which is the Sun's faint outer light.

In a partial eclipse, the Moon only covers part of the Sun.

An annular eclipse happens when the Moon looks too small to cover the Sun. This leaves a bright ring around the Moon.

Why does this happen? The Moon's orbit is tilted by about 5 degrees. Because of this tilt, the Moon's shadow usually misses Earth. An eclipse only occurs during eclipse seasons. These seasons happen about every six months.

Total eclipses are rare for one place. They happen somewhere on Earth every 18 months. But they hit the same spot only once every 360 to 410 years. You must use special eye protection to watch. Looking at the Sun can cause permanent eye damage. Only the total phase is safe to see without protection.
