An eclipse is a special event in the sky.

Astronomers use a cycle called a saros to predict them. A saros lasts about 18 years. It is exactly 223 synodic months long. This is the time between new moons. It is also about 242 draconic months. A draconic month is the time it takes the Moon to return to a specific point in its orbit.

Because these cycles match up, the Sun, Earth, and Moon return to a similar shape. They form a nearly straight line again. This means a nearly identical eclipse will happen.

Each eclipse belongs to a saros series. These series can last a very long time. One series can last between 1,226 and 1,550 years. People have known about this cycle for a long time. Ancient astronomers in Babylonia studied it.

An old Greek tool called the Antikythera Mechanism even has these numbers on it. The saros helps us see the patterns in our sky.
