This spin is called rotation. Most days last 24 hours. This is 86,400 seconds. As Earth spins, we see morning, afternoon, and night.

Many living things use this cycle. It helps them know when to sleep or eat. This is called a circadian rhythm. People use days to make calendars. A solar calendar uses the Sun to track the seasons. A lunar calendar uses the Moon's phases.

Different places start the day at different times. Most people use midnight. Some use sunset. In astronomy, a day might start at noon.

Days are not always the same length. The Moon's pull slows Earth's spin. This can add a leap second to a day. Long ago, days were much shorter. At Earth's start, a day was only 6 hours long.

Other planets have different days too. For example, a day on Ceres is about 9 hours.
