Midnight is a special time. It is when one day ends. It is also when a new day starts.

On a clock, midnight is the opposite of noon. They are twelve hours apart. Most people think of midnight as the start of a new day. We often use the number 00:00 to show this.

There is also solar midnight. This is when the sun is at its lowest point. This happens in the middle of the night. Solar midnight is different from clock midnight. This is because of time zones. It also changes with the time of year.

Some languages use the same word for midnight and north. This is true in Polish and Serbian. In these languages, the word for midnight also means north.

Using "a.m." or "p.m." for midnight can be tricky. The term "a.m." means before noon. The term "p.m." means after noon. Since midnight is exactly twelve hours from noon, it is hard to pick. Some digital clocks in the U.S. use 12 a.m. To avoid mistakes, some experts suggest using 11:59 p.m. or 12:01 a.m. instead.
