White objects look bright because they reflect light. They reflect almost all the light that hits them. On a computer screen, white is made by mixing red, blue, and green light. For painting, people use white pigments. One common kind is titanium dioxide.

White has many meanings in history. In ancient Rome, citizens wore white togas. In ancient Egypt, priests wore white linen. Some people use white to show purity or goodness. In many Western cultures, brides wear white wedding dresses. In some Asian cultures, white is the color for mourning.

Artists have used white for a very long time. People used chalk to draw in caves 18,000 years ago. In the past, painters used a pigment called lead white. It was very hard to make. Later, scientists found a better way to make white. They used titanium to make a very bright pigment. This new white is very common today.
