A day has 24 hours. We often split these into two parts. This is called the 12-hour clock.

Each part has 12 hours. We use a.m. for the first part. This means "before midday." The second part is p.m. This means "after midday." The a.m. part starts at midnight. The p.m. part starts at noon.

People have used this for a long time. Ancient Egyptians used sundials for the day. They used water clocks for the night.

Many countries use the 12-hour clock. This includes the United States and the United Kingdom. It is also used in India and Mexico. Other places use a 24-hour clock. Doctors and pilots often use the 24-hour clock instead.

Most analog clocks use a 12-hour dial. An analog clock has moving hands. The short hour hand goes around twice every day. Some clocks show both 12 and 24-hour numbers. This helps people read the time in different ways.
