The festival began on November 1st. People in Ireland and Scotland celebrated it. They held great feasts and meetings. They even held contests.

In old stories, Samhain was a special time. People believed the boundary between worlds was thin. The spirits or 'aos sí' could visit.

People set a place at the table for dead kin. They also gave food to the spirits. This helped ensure everyone survived the winter. Some people wore costumes. They did this to hide from the spirits. Others went door-to-door for food. They might recite verses to get treats.

Farmers also used this time to move cattle. They brought animals down from summer pastures. People lit big bonfires for protection. These old ways helped shape modern Halloween. Many American traditions come from these customs.
