Most faces have numbers from 1 to 12.

There are different types of hands. A short hour hand moves the slowest. It makes two full circles in one day. A long minute hand moves faster. It makes one circle every hour. Some clocks also have a thin second hand. This hand moves very quickly. It makes one circle every minute.

All hands move in a clockwise way. This means they turn toward the higher numbers. This way of moving comes from sundials. In the Northern hemisphere, a sundial shadow moves this way.

Clocks can look many ways. Some use Roman numerals. Others use Arabic numerals, which are the numbers we use every day. Some faces have no numbers at all. They only use small marks. A 24-hour dial is also used by the military.
