An analog clock face is a tool used to show time.

It uses a flat dial with marks to help us read the hour. Moving pointers called hands turn on shafts at the center of the dial. Most common faces use a 12-hour cycle. This means the numbers 1 through 12 are printed around the edge.

These numbers help us understand how much of the day has passed. Some special clocks use a 24-hour dial instead. This type is often used by the military to track time.

Watching the hands move is a great way to see how time works.

A short, thick hand is called the hour hand. It is the slowest hand on the clock. It takes twelve hours to make one full circle. A long, thinner hand is the minute hand. It moves faster than the hour hand. It makes one full circle every single hour. Some clocks also have a very thin second hand. This hand moves the quickest of all. It makes a full rotation every sixty seconds. All these hands move in a clockwise direction.

Clock history goes back many centuries. The word clock comes from a medieval Latin word for "bell."

The first mechanical clocks were built in Europe during the 13th century. These were striking clocks used to ring bells for prayer. They were often placed in tall towers. Soon, makers added a dial so people could see the time. Before the late 14th century, the dial rotated instead of the hands. Minute hands did not become common until around 1690. This happened after new inventions made clocks more precise.

People have tried different ways to number clock faces.

Some clocks use Roman numerals, while others use Arabic numerals. Clocks with only Arabic numerals began to appear in the mid-18th century. In 1793, France tried a very different system called decimal time. This system had 10 hours in a day. Each hour had 100 minutes. Each minute had 100 seconds. This was much longer than our normal hours. France stopped using this system on April 7, 1795. However, some cities kept using it until 1801.

In the past, makers used black wax or white enamel to make numbers easy to read. Many modern advertisements show clocks at 10:10. This makes the hands look like a happy smile. This shape also keeps the company logo clear. Today, many people use digital clocks on phones or computers. Some schools even use digital clocks for exams. However, learning to read analog faces helps students with math. It is a skill that stays useful for a long time.
