Today, we define one hour as exactly 3,600 seconds. This measurement is part of the modern metric system. There are 60 minutes in every single hour. A full day is made up of 24 of these hours. We use hours to organize our lives every day. They help us know when to work or sleep.

In the past, hours worked in a different way. Ancient Egyptians divided the night into 12 parts. These were called seasonal hours. This means the length of an hour changed with the seasons. In ancient Greece, people also used seasonal hours. They split the time from sunrise to sunset into 12 parts. They also split the night into 12 parts. This helped people track the sun and the stars.

Many people helped shape how we track time. An astronomer named Hipparchus of Nicaea likely first divided the day and night into 24 hours. In Athens, a man named Andronicus of Cyrrhus built the Tower of the Winds. This structure used sundials to track the 24-hour day. During the Middle Ages, astronomers like al-Biruni and Sacrobosco used different math. They divided the hour into 60 minutes. Each minute was then divided into 60 seconds.

Timekeeping has changed many times throughout history. During the French Revolution, France tried using decimal time between 1794 and 1800. In this system, an hour was divided into 100 decimal minutes. This did not last very long. Today, we use Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC. Sometimes, we add a leap second to our hours. This happens to keep our clocks close to the Earth's rotation. This keeps our time very accurate for everyone.

We see the idea of the hour in many places. We use a 12-hour clock and say "o'clock" for whole hours. We also use a 24-hour clock, which some call military time. People often talk about "rush hour" when traffic is heavy. Some places have a "happy hour" with special prices. Even athletes care about the hour. Cyclists try to see how far they can go in one hour. This shows how much the hour matters to us.
