Instead of splitting the day into two parts, this system counts every hour from midnight to midnight. A single day is divided into 24 equal hours. This notation is used by the international standard ISO 8601. It is the most common way to show time in the world today. Most people use it to keep things very clear.

This way of telling time works by counting hours passed since midnight. We use numbers from 00 to 23 for the hours. We use numbers from 00 to 59 for the minutes. We can even use seconds from 00 to 59.

A colon is the most common symbol used to separate these numbers. For example, 01:23 shows one hour and twenty-three minutes. If you need to show the exact end of a day, you can use 24:00. This helps show the very last moment of a time period.

History shows that people have used different systems for a long time. Early mechanical clocks in Italy were 24-hour clocks. They started counting one-half hour after the sun went down.

In Europe, different systems competed for many centuries. One system used 24 hours starting at sunset. Another used a 12-hour system that restarted at noon. An engineer named Sandford Fleming helped promote the modern 24-hour clock. He wanted to reform how we track time. The Canadian Pacific Railway was one of the first groups to use it in 1886.

Many different places and groups adopted this system at different times. Italy was one of the first to use it nationally in 1893. France adopted it in 1912, and Denmark followed in 1916. Greece used it starting in 1917. Many countries in Latin America also used it by the early 1920s. The British Royal Navy adopted it in 1915 during World War I. The United States Navy was the first U.S. group to use it in 1920. The United States Army did not officially use it until July 1, 1942.

You can see this clock in action in many parts of your life. Most computers use the 24-hour clock by default. In the United States, people often call it military time.

Some jobs use it to prevent mistakes. Doctors use it to write down medical history clearly. This stops any confusion about when an event happened. Pilots and doctors also use it because it is very precise. It helps everyone stay on the same schedule.
