Scientists call a special kind of noon "solar noon." This happens when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky. You can see this using a tool called a sundial. At solar noon, the Sun is at its highest position above the horizon. This moment is also called the Sun transit time. It is a very important marker for the day.

Solar noon works in a very specific way. It happens when the Sun contacts the local meridian. A meridian is an imaginary line in the sky. When the Sun hits this line, it casts the shortest shadow of the day. At the Equator, the Sun is directly overhead during the equinoxes. At the Tropic of Cancer, this happens during the June solstice. At the Tropic of Capricorn, it happens during the December solstice. If the Sun is at your zenith, it is directly above you. In that case, no shadows are cast at all.

The word "noon" has a long history. It comes from the Latin words "nona hora." This means the ninth hour. In the past, Christian prayer times used this name. A monastic day used to start at 6:00 a.m. at the equinox. This meant the ninth hour ended at 3:00 p.m. The meaning of the word changed over time. It began to shift toward midday in the 12th century. By the 14th century, the change was fixed.

There are many facts about how we measure this time. Solar noon and clock noon are usually not the same. A clock might be off by 16 minutes. This is due to something called the equation of time. Time zones and daylight saving time can also change things. These can move solar noon closer to 1:00 p.m. In the US, noon is often called 12 p.m. This comes from the Latin term "post meridiem." This term means "after midday."

You can see how noon links to your daily life. Most people use 12 p.m. to show noon on digital clocks. Some people prefer to use a 24-hour clock. They might use 12:00 to be very clear. Travel workers often use 11:59 p.m. to avoid confusion. This helps people catch trains or planes on time. Even though the Sun moves in a steady way, our clocks change. This helps us organize our busy lives every day.
