Imagine you are standing in an open field. If you look straight up, you are looking toward the zenith.

The zenith is an imaginary point in the sky. It is located directly above your specific place on Earth. It is the highest point on the celestial sphere. This point is opposite to the direction of gravity. The direction pointing straight down is called the nadir.

Understanding these points helps us map the stars.

Scientists use the zenith to measure the sky. They often measure the zenith angle. This is the angle between a star and the zenith.

You can also think about the Sun. The Sun reaches the zenith when it is 90 degrees above the horizon. This only happens in certain parts of the world. These areas are between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The exact spot where the Sun is overhead is the subsolar point.

The word zenith has a very interesting history. It comes from an Arabic expression. The phrase meant the direction of the head. In the 14th century, Latin scribes read the phrase incorrectly. They misread a letter and changed the word. It became the word senit or cenit. Later, it appeared in Old French as cenith. By the 17th century, it became the word we use today.

Some special stars are called zenith stars. These stars pass through the zenith at certain times. This happens when the star's declination matches your latitude.

Sailors used these stars for celestial navigation. By watching these stars, they could find their latitude. If they knew the time in Greenwich, they could also find longitude. This helped them know exactly where they were on the ocean.

We see the idea of the zenith in many places. Astronauts on the International Space Station use these terms. They say zenith and nadir instead of up and down. This describes directions relative to the Earth. Scientists also build special tools called zenith telescopes. These telescopes are designed to point straight up. The Large Zenith Telescope is one example of this.
