Day

physical science Maturity 11-13 Vital Level 3 Next article →

A day is the time it takes Earth to spin once. This spinning motion is called rotation. On average, a day lasts 24 hours. This is the same as 86,400 seconds. As Earth rotates, we experience morning, afternoon, evening, and night.

This daily cycle is very important for life. Many living things have circadian rhythms. These are internal cycles that help them know when to sleep or eat. We use days to organize our lives into calendars. A solar calendar follows the Sun and the seasons. A lunar calendar follows the phases of the Moon.

There are different ways to measure a day. A solar day is when the Sun returns to its highest point in the sky. Because Earth's orbit is not a perfect circle, the Sun's position changes. This means a solar day can change by about 7.9 seconds. Scientists also use a sidereal day. This is the time it takes for one full rotation against the stars. A sidereal day is about 4 minutes shorter than a solar day. It lasts about 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.09 seconds.

People have used different rules for days throughout history. Most people today start a new day at midnight. This is written as 00:00 or 12:00am on a clock. However, other groups use different start times. The Jewish religious calendar starts the day at sunset. In astronomy, a day can start at noon. This helps scientists keep a whole night of observations on one day.

Time zones help us keep a standard time across the world. These were used more often after railroads began running in the mid-19th century. By 1929, most major countries had adopted them. Today, there are 40 time zones in use. The central zone is called UTC+00.

Some places also use daylight saving time. This can make one day last 23 hours and another last 25 hours. Earth's rotation is also slowly slowing down because of the Moon's pull. This can lead to a leap second being added to a day. Between 1972 and 2022, there were 27 leap seconds added.

Every planet in our solar system has its own day length. For example, a day on Mercury lasts 708.7 hours. A day on Mars is about 24.7 hours. Other worlds spin much faster. Jupiter has a day that lasts only 9.9 hours. Saturn's day is 10.7 hours. Uranus has a day of 17.2 hours, and Neptune's is 16.1 hours. Even the dwarf planet Ceres has a day of about 9 to 9.1 hours.

Long ago, Earth's days were much shorter. At the time of Earth's formation, a day was only about 6 hours long.
