Digital data is a way of representing information using a string of separate symbols.

Each symbol comes from a specific set, like letters or numbers. Most modern computers use a form called binary data. This uses bits, which are tiny pieces of information. A bit can only have one of two values: 0 or 1.

This is different from analog data. Analog data uses a continuous range of values, like the way air pressure changes in a sound wave. Digital data is much more specific and easier for machines to handle.

To turn symbols into digital data, computers use a way of working called polling.

Imagine a group of switches on a keyboard. A computer checks these switches at regular intervals to see which ones are pressed. This is called scanning. In a large keyboard, switches are arranged in a grid called a scan matrix. The computer activates lines in the grid one by one to find which keys are active. Once it finds a key, it converts that press into a number. This number is then encoded into a symbol the computer understands.

People have used the word "digital" for a long time. It comes from the Latin word "digitus," which means finger. This is because humans often use their fingers to count. In 1942, a mathematician named George Stibitz used the word in a new way. He used it to describe fast electric pulses in a device used to aim guns. Since then, the term has become most common in electronics and computing. Today, we use it whenever real-world information is turned into binary numbers.

Our world has changed a lot because of this technology. In 1986, less than 1% of the world's information storage was digital. By 2007, that number jumped to 94%.

A very important year was 2002. This is when humans began storing more information in digital formats than in analog formats. We call this the beginning of the digital age. Now, almost everything we do with computers relies on these tiny bits of data.

Data can exist in three different states. First, there is data at rest, which is information sitting in storage like a hard drive or the cloud.

Second, there is data in use. This is active data being used by a computer's memory, like RAM. Third, there is data in transit, which is moving from one place to another. Because data is so important, people use encryption to keep it safe. Encryption uses codes to hide information from hackers so it stays private.
