Digital data uses a set of symbols. Most computers use binary data. This means they use bits. A bit is a tiny piece of data. It can be a 0 or a 1.

Digital data is different from analog data. Analog data moves in a smooth way. It can be many different values. Digital data uses only specific values.

Data can be in three different states.

The first state is data at rest. This is data sitting in storage. It might be on a hard drive. It might be in the cloud. The second state is data in use. This is active data. It is being used by a computer right now. This data lives in the computer's memory. The third state is data in transit. This is data moving from one place to another.

People must keep data safe. They use encryption. This is a way to hide data using a code. This keeps it away from hackers. In 2002, we entered the digital age. We now store more digital data than analog data.
