The name comes from a Latin word for fingers. We can use digits alone, like the number 1. We can also put them together to make bigger numbers. For example, 1 and 5 make 15.

Different systems use different amounts of digits. Our common system is called decimal. It uses ten digits from 0 to 9. In this system, each spot has a place value. In the number 12, the 2 is in the units place. The 1 is in the tens place.

Other groups used different ways to count. The Maya used a base 20 system. They had twenty digits and used a shell for zero.

Chinese and Japanese math users used counting rods. These were small sticks used to show numbers. Computers also use digits. A binary system uses only two digits, 0 and 1. A hexadecimal system uses sixteen digits. It uses numbers and letters from A to F.
