Data communication is the way we move information between points.

It can happen between just two things or many things at once. This information travels through different channels like copper wires or glass optical fibers. It can even move through the air using wireless radio waves.

Data is sent as an electromagnetic signal. This might be an electrical voltage or a microwave signal. It can also be an infrared signal. These signals allow our machines to talk to each other.

There are two main ways this works. Analog transmission uses a continuous signal that changes its shape or strength. This can carry voices, images, or video. Digital communication is different because it uses discrete messages. These messages are often sent as a sequence of pulses.

Digital signals are very helpful for fixing mistakes. They allow us to detect and correct errors in the message. This makes the communication much more reliable. You can think of digital as a way to make sure the message stays perfect.

People have been sending data for a long time. Long ago, people used light or sound to send messages. Electronic data transmission began with the telegraph in 1809. Later, teletypewriters arrived in 1906.

In the 1960s, Paul Baran and Donald Davies made huge changes. Baran worked on switching voice messages using electronics. Davies helped create modern data communication between 1965 and 1967. He invented things like packet switching and high-speed routers. Their work helped build the computer networks we use today.

Many important tools help data move every day. Modems were used as early as 1940. Local area network adapters appeared in 1964.

In 1952, Ronald Hugh Barker invented the Barker code. This helped receivers get digital data accurately. We also see many specific types of connections. For example, USB was introduced in 1996. FireWire came out in 1995. Even the RS-232 serial port has been around since 1969. These dates show how much technology has grown.

Data can travel in two main patterns. Serial transmission sends bits one by one on a single path. This is great for long distances because it has fewer errors. Parallel transmission sends many bits at the same time using many paths. This is very fast and is often used inside a computer.

You might see this when you use a printer or a computer bus. Digital communication is part of almost everything you use. It powers your cell phone, your digital TV, and your internet. It connects the whole world through tiny pulses of energy.
