Electronics is a special field of science and engineering. It uses the rules of physics to build helpful tools. These tools work by moving electrons and other tiny charged particles.

Scientists use these particles to control electric current. They can also change the current from one form to another. This might mean turning alternating current into direct current. It can also mean changing analog signals into digital signals. This science helps our modern world work every day. It powers our phones, our schools, and even our hospitals.

How do these devices actually work? It all starts with small parts called components. Some parts are called active components, like transistors or diodes. These parts can control the flow of electricity at a very tiny level.

Other parts are called passive components, such as resistors or capacitors. Engineers connect these parts together on a printed circuit board. This creates a circuit that can perform a specific job. Some circuits are analog and use a continuous range of voltage. Other circuits are digital and use two levels, called 0 and 1. These digital circuits are the brains inside most modern computers.

People have been discovering these secrets for a long time. In 1874, Karl Ferdinand Braun made the first semiconductor device. Later, in 1897, Sir Joseph John Thomson identified the electron.

In the early 1900s, inventors like Ambrose Fleming and Lee De Forest made diodes and triodes. These parts helped people listen to radio signals for the first time. For many years, people used large vacuum tubes to control electricity. These tubes helped create early radio, television, and radar. They were very important until they were replaced by smaller parts.

New inventions changed everything in the middle of the last century. In 1947, John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain invented the first transistor.

This was a huge step forward for science. In 1955, the IBM 608 became a famous calculator using transistors. It used more than 3,000 germanium transistors inside. Later, scientists at Bell Labs invented the MOSFET between 1955 and 1960. The MOSFET is a tiny transistor that can be made in huge numbers. It is now the most used electronic device in the entire world. By 2008, scientists could even make processors with billions of transistors.

Electronics are all around us in our daily lives. You can find them in the games you play and the ways you shop online.

The semiconductor industry is a huge part of the global economy. In 2018, this industry made over $481 billion in money. Even online shopping is part of this world, making $29 trillion in 2017. Everything from a simple radio to a giant supercomputer uses these principles. It is amazing to think that tiny moving particles power our whole world.
