Electronics is a scientific and engineering discipline. It studies the principles of physics to design and operate devices. These devices work by manipulating electrons and other electrically charged particles.

Engineers use these particles to control the flow of electric current. They can also convert current from one form to another. For example, they can change alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). They can also convert analog signals into digital signals. This field is a subfield of both physics and electrical engineering.

Electronic systems rely on many different components. These parts are connected together on a printed circuit board (PCB). Some parts are called passive components. These include resistors, capacitors, and inductors. Other parts are called active components. These include transistors and thyristors. Active components are special because they control current at the electron level.

These components can be packaged alone or in complex groups. These groups are known as integrated circuits.

Circuits generally fall into two main categories. These are analog circuits and digital circuits. Analog circuits use a continuous range of voltage or current. They were very common in early radio receivers and transmitters. Today, they are often used for signal amplification in the entertainment industry. Digital circuits use discrete voltage levels instead. They use a binary system with two levels, called 0 and 1. These levels indicate a logical status, often called Low and High. Digital circuits are the foundation of all modern computers and microprocessors.

The history of electronics began with several key discoveries. In 1874, Karl Ferdinand Braun developed the crystal detector. This was the first semiconductor device. In 1897, Sir Joseph John Thomson identified the electron. Later, Ambrose Fleming invented the diode. Lee De Forest then invented the triode in the early 1900s. These inventions allowed for the detection of small electrical voltages. This made radio signals much easier to use in practical ways.

For many years, vacuum tubes were the primary active component. They could amplify and rectify small electrical signals. This technology enabled the creation of radio, television, and radar. Vacuum tubes remained important for high power transmission until the mid-1980s. However, the invention of the transistor changed everything. In 1947, John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain invented the first point-contact transistor.

This led to the rise of solid-state devices.

In 1955, the IBM 608 became a major milestone. It was the first IBM product to use transistor circuits without vacuum tubes. It was likely the first all-transistorized calculator for the commercial market. This machine contained more than 3,000 germanium transistors. Between 1955 and 1960, Bell Labs invented the MOSFET. This was the first compact transistor that could be mass-produced. The MOSFET is now the most widely used electronic device in the world. It is the basic element in almost all modern electronic equipment.

As circuits became more complex, engineers faced new challenges. Large components meant longer wires, which slowed down computers. Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce solved this by inventing the integrated circuit. This allowed all components to be made from a single block of semiconductor material. This led to small-scale integration (SSI) in the early 1960s. It was followed by medium-scale integration (MSI) and very-large-scale integration (VLSI). By 2008, processors with billions of transistors were commercially available.

Electronics play a massive role in the global economy. The semiconductor industry is one of the largest and most profitable. In 2018, its annual revenues exceeded $481 billion. Electronics also support massive industries like e-commerce. In 2017, online sales generated over $29 trillion.
