Electronic circuit

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An electronic circuit is a special way to use electricity. It is made of many small parts. These parts include resistors, transistors, capacitors, inductors, and diodes.

These parts connect using wires or paths called traces. Electricity flows through these paths to do work. A circuit is called electronic if it has an active component. An active component can control the flow of electricity. These circuits allow us to do many things. They can make signals bigger or move data around. They can even perform math problems.

There are different ways these circuits work. An analog circuit uses signals that change smoothly over time. These signals can change their voltage or current constantly.

Digital circuits work in a different way. They use signals that take on specific, separate values. Most digital circuits use a system called binary. This uses two values to show information. One voltage represents a '1'. A different voltage represents a '0'. This allows computers to process data. Some circuits are mixed-signal circuits. These use both analog and digital parts together.

People use different methods to build these circuits. In the past, parts were joined by individual wires. Today, most circuits use a printed circuit board, or PCB. This is a flat base with paths on it. Engineers use a process called photolithography to make these paths. Then, they solder the parts onto the board. Some circuits are even smaller than a board. These are called integrated circuits, or ICs. In an IC, all the parts and paths are on one tiny piece. This piece is usually made of a material called a semiconductor.

Many different materials and parts make these systems possible. Silicon is a common semiconductor used for integrated circuits. Some people also use gallium arsenide for these chips. One very common part is the MOSFET. This is a type of transistor that helps circuits work.

Digital circuits can have billions of tiny parts on one chip. These chips are used in many tools we use every day. You can find them in calculators and mobile phones. They are also inside computers. Some special chips are called FPGAs. These can be changed even after they are made.

Electronic circuits are part of almost everything we use. You can see them in the phone in your hand. You can find them in the computer on a desk.

Even a simple radio uses these circuits to work. A radio receiver uses analog parts to grow a signal. Then, it uses digital parts to process that signal. This is why we can listen to music or talk on phones. The tiny parts work together to make modern life possible. It is amazing how much happens inside such small spaces.
