Electronic components are the tiny building blocks of modern machines.

They are physical parts used to control the flow of electrons. These parts work together to create an electronic circuit. A circuit is a complete path that allows electricity to move. Most components have metal leads or terminals. These leads connect the parts to each other using wires.

By connecting these pieces, engineers can build amazing things like radios or computers.

There are different ways these parts work. Some are called active components because they need a power source to operate. For example, a transistor can switch signals or make them stronger.

Other parts are called passive components. These parts cannot add energy to a circuit on their own. A resistor is a passive part that slows down electrical current.

Capacitors are also passive. They store and release electrical charge when needed.

You might also use a potentiometer, which is a resistor you can change.

History shows how these parts have changed our world. Transistors are often called the invention of the twentieth century. They changed electronic circuits forever by allowing for smaller and faster machines. Before modern transistors, people used vacuum tubes to control electricity. These older parts were much larger than the tiny components we use today. Now, many parts are integrated into single packages called integrated circuits. This allows a huge number of tiny parts to live inside one small chip.

Scientists and engineers use many specific types of components. One very common part is the MOSFET, which is a type of field-effect transistor.

There are also diodes, which let electricity flow in only one direction. Some diodes, called light-emitting diodes or LEDs, actually create light.

Engineers also use sensors to detect things like magnetic fields. Some components even use quartz crystals to help keep time. There are hundreds of different names for these parts depending on how they behave.

You can see these components in almost everything you touch. The screen on a phone might use LED technology to show pictures.

A computer uses a microprocessor, which is a very advanced electronic component.

Even a simple flashlight uses a battery and a circuit to work. Everything from a large radio to a small toy relies on these tiny parts. They are the hidden pieces that make our high-tech world possible.
