A digital clock shows time using numbers or symbols. This is different from an analogue clock.

Most digital clocks use electricity to run. They use a steady vibration to keep time. This can come from 60 hertz power. It can also come from a quartz crystal oscillator. An oscillator is a part that vibrates at a very steady rate. This helps the clock stay accurate. Many clocks show time in a 24-hour format. In the United States, people often use a 12-hour format. This uses AM and PM to show the time of day.

Most digital clocks use special parts to show numbers. They often use a seven-segment LED or an LCD. LCD stands for liquid crystal display. These screens can also show an analogue-style face. Some high-end clocks use a dot matrix display. This allows the clock to use animations when digits change. Older clocks were different. They used numbers painted on wheels. Some even used a split-flap display.

People have been making digital displays for a long time. Josef Pallweber made a jump-hour pocket watch in 1883. It used rotating discs to show the time.

The Ansonia Clock Company made Plato clocks in 1904. These used small cards with numbers that flipped. In 1956, D. E. Protzmann patented a digital alarm clock. The Hamilton Watch Company made the Pulsar wristwatch. It had an LED display. This watch was first seen on The Tonight Show in 1970. It was released to people in 1972.

Setting a digital clock can sometimes be a hard job. If the power cuts off, the clock might reset. It might show 00:00 or 12:00. This is a problem for alarm clocks. If the power goes out at night, the alarm might not ring. Many clocks use a battery backup to fix this. This keeps the time during a power outage. Some modern clocks set themselves automatically. They can get time from a radio signal or a satellite.
