A stopwatch is a special tool for measuring time. It measures the time that passes between starting and stopping.

People use them when they need to be very precise. You might see them at a fast sprint or in a science lab. A large version used in a stadium is called a stop clock. This allows many people to see the time from far away.

Most stopwatches work using a few simple buttons. The top button starts the timer. You press that same button again to stop it. This leaves the total time on the display. A second button resets the timer back to zero. You can also use this button to see split times. A split time lets you read the time without stopping the main timer.

There are two main ways these tools get their power. Mechanical stopwatches use a mainspring to work. You often wind this spring by turning a knob at the top. Digital stopwatches are different and use a crystal oscillator. This part makes them much more accurate than mechanical ones. Many digital models also have a microchip inside. This chip can even show the date and time of day.

Digital timers have a long history in sports. The first digital timer for sports was the Digitimer. Cox Electronic Systems, Inc. made it in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was created in 1962 and used a Nixie-tube readout. It could measure time as small as 1/1000 of a second. People used it for ski racing and the World University Games in Moscow. It was also used in the U.S. NCAA and Olympic trials.

We use timing tools in our daily lives all the time. Many cell phones and computers have stopwatch functions built in. You can also find them on wristwatches and music players. Humans can make mistakes when pressing buttons by hand. It takes about 180 to 200 milliseconds to react to a sight. Manual timing can have an error of about 0.04 seconds. Scientists use special math to help reduce these errors.
