Most stopwatches have two buttons. The top button starts the timer. Pressing it again stops the timer. A second button can reset the time to zero. This second button can also show lap times. A lap time shows the time for one part of a race. The watch keeps running even when you look at a lap time.

Some stopwatches are mechanical. They use a mainspring to work. You must wind this spring up to give it power. Other stopwatches are digital. They use a tiny part called a crystal oscillator to keep time. These are very accurate. They often use a microchip to work. This chip can also show the date.

People use stopwatches for sports and science. A digital timer called the Digitimer was used in ski racing. It could measure time down to 1/1000 of a second. Most people use minutes and seconds. Some use one-hundredth of a second too. You can find these timers on phones and computers.
